December 7, 1941 - A Day in Infamy
On a peaceful Sunday Morning on the island of Oahu in Hawaii, the United
States was thrust into the war that they were trying to avoid. At
just before 8:00 AM nearly 200 Japanese planes attacked the Airfields at
Pearl Harbor followed quickly by another wave of torpedo bombers that
attacked the ships that were anchored there. A total of nine ships were
sunk, including the USS Arizona, and 21 ships were severely damaged.
Over 2,300 Americans were killed in the attack and nearly 1,200 were
injured.
The theme of the Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade is "Remembering our past
and celebrating our future. The purpose of the parade is to honor and
pay respect to the Pearl Harbor Survivors, our veterans, active duty
military and their families. The Military Order of the Purple Heart will
symbolize all of the great heroes of military conflicts throughout our
history. Your presence in the parade will pay tribute to the brave
Sailors and Marines who gave their lives on the USS Arizona, and help
the parade committee commemorate the 50th anniversary of the dedication
of the USS Arizona Memorial.
